New book ‘Drawn Out, Sworn In’ inspires individuals to take part in politics
SUFFOLK, Va. (PRWEB) January 05, 2015 -- According to a Nov. 6, 2012, article in The Atlantic’s Citylab.com titled The Skyrocketing Costs of Running for Mayor of a Major U.S. City, the costs of running for mayor easily runs in the millions of dollars up to a figure of around $100M in the case of New York City. Reading a selection of related articles shows that this is reflective of all campaign costs across all levels of government. With this reality in mind, how does one run a political campaign with little more than pocket change?
Lue Ward, together with Johnnie Edwards, managed to do just that, managing a win for Ward as city councilman in Suffolk, Va. In “Drawn Out, Sworn In” (published by Xlibris), they relate the story and details behind the “Peanut City Miracle” during the 2012 elections in Suffolk, Virginia. Ward started without money, one worker and a newspaper, but achieved on the grassroots level the “Peanut City Miracle.” With a month left in the campaign, he only had $247 and was the laughing stock of the community, but he believed, he persevered and he triumphed. It is an inspiring tale encouraging people to not let their lack stop their greatness.
This book shows the real-time effects of the Shelby v. Holder Supreme Court decision that gutted the Section 4 and 5 portions of the Voting Rights Act. It gives the reader inside information on the inner workings of local government, and the political process. It also highlights the importance of mentoring and inner generational relationships. “We would like the reader to take away from the book that all dreams are possible,” says the authors, “We would like them to see that their voice matters when they decide to use it for the good of all.” It is a story of hard work, dedication, failure and perseverance written in the hope of inspiring others who desire to be a part of the political process.
