Fortune cookies, one breaks them and reads the ‘fortune’ written on a strip of paper inside it. For the most part, they are just old sayings, but Canute Kelly’s fascination with them has inspired him to interweave them into his personal narrative as those of her grandmother’s stories in “1000 + 1 Fortunes, Short Stories and Proverbs for Success” (published by Xlibris) to bring context to the ‘fortunes’ that he has read and unveil the wisdom contained therein.
An excerpt from the book reads:
The book is 1001 Fortunes, Proverbs, and Stories but it is written as 1000+1 and the reason for doing that is that I would like each reader to contribute one fortune that has stood out in their lives. Whether from a family member or from a fortune cookie, just think of one that you have remembered.
By its very definition, a fortune is meant to tell something about one’s future. It sounds superstitious, but it must be taken into mind that certain philosophies, eastern in this case, view time as a great circle. There is a cycle to the way things happen in much the same way that the seasons exist in a cycle. What was true then could be true today and could also be true tomorrow.
In “1000 + 1 Fortunes, Short Stories and Proverbs for Success,” Kelly takes readers into a journey into his past to show how much meaning he has found in fortune cookies. It is his hope that people who read his book would do as he did and look within themselves to find the meaning of their fortune in the context of their lives. Perhaps this will guide them in awakening the power that lies locked within themselves and help them reach for their success.

About the Author
Canute Kelly migrated from Jamaica to the US when he was 14 years old. This has given him the perspective of two cultures and, with the passing of time and cultures ever evolving, he realized the uniqueness of his story. He took with him his grandmother’s legacy, through her stories; his childhood experiences, and the opportunity of a new culture to forge a personality that is all his own. He has found that time, place and experiences all factor into a person’s reality; moving from Jamaica to Miami made the tapestry of his life.
