Dickinson Wright to Host the Detroit Urban Debate League
DETROIT, Mich. (PRWEB) March 25, 2015 -- Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that it will host the fourth annual Detroit Urban Debate League (DUDL) “Aspiring Attorneys” Tournament on March 25, 2015. High schools from across the Detroit area will debate at Dickinson Wright’s Detroit office located in the One Detroit Center (500 Woodward Avenue, Suite 4000) building in downtown Detroit.
“When the DUDL asked if we would host the tournament again this year, we jumped at the chance,” said Dickinson Wright Member and DUDL Advisory Board Member Katheryne Zelenock. “As a former debater and debate coach, I understand the academic and social benefit of debate. This is also a great way for Dickinson Wright to continue its commitment to Detroit, and to support a great educational activity for a diverse group of high school students, many of whom are interested in a career in law.”
The DUDL strives to improve public education and the lives of Detroit youth through rigorous and sustainable academic debate programming. Debaters spend an average of 10-15 hours a week studying argumentation techniques, philosophy, current events, economics, and foreign and U.S. policies. The results of the program are stunning. Students who have participated in DUDL are 70 percent more likely to graduate from high school and are twice as likely to score at or above the college readiness benchmark on the English portion of the ACT. Several former DUDL debaters currently attend college on full or partial debate scholarships.
DUDL is the defending national champion of the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues Tournament. DUDL students have qualified for this year’s tournament to be held in Los Angeles in April.
