Jason Hope Comments on Kaspersky Lab CEO Calling Internet of Things the 'Internet of Threats,'
(PRWEB) March 24, 2015 -- Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab, has stated that the Internet of Things should be called the Internet of Threats, as reported in the Boston Business Journal. According to a Boston Business Journal report, Kaspersky believes that the threats presented by the Internet of Things are quite dangerous. Jason Hope, Internet of Things enthusiast and entrepreneur, comments on Kaspersky's assessment of the threat level.
According to the March 10 article entitled "Kaspersky Lab CEO: The Internet of Things means 'Internet of Threats,' which Tech Editor David Harris (@davharris) wrote, Kaspersky was quoted as saying the Internet of Things was an "Internet of Threats" in a meeting with technology reporters in Boston in early March. "We have to look at possible criminal scenarios of (any) device," he said.
According to Kaspersky, most Internet of Things devices have security flaws, including simple things like kitchen appliances. Kaspersky's firm works to develop protections for these threats, whether real or imagined, so that consumers will be prepared for the future of the Internet of Things. "We are 100 percent sure (these threats) will happen. When? We don't know," he said.
Jason Hope of Scottsdale, AZ, believes this threat warning may be inflated slightly. "Is there a threat, yes," he said, "but realistically, who is going to hack your smart coffee maker? It's important to consider what criminals think they could do with a device before worrying about its potential risks."
Like Kaspersky, Jason Hope believes there are some risks, but that those risks may be device specific. "I would caution consumers not to panic, but to be thoughtful in their purchases as we move forward with the development of the Internet of Things," he said.
Kaspersky Lab is an Internet security firm based in Moscow. Mr. Kaspersky was in Boston to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of its Woburn office. The company has around 3,000 employees worldwide, with 300 employed in its U.S. headquarters in Woburn. When the Woburn facility opened, it had just four employees. This growth shows the growth in potential security risks across the connected world.
