“Customers over the years have urged us to offer more bags for women,” explains Gary Waterfield. “I wasn’t sure we were qualified to do that until I saw the work of Amyel Oliveros, a recent graduate of the Konstfack design school and the Pratt Institute. In addition to an impressive list of design credentials, Amyel’s Masters thesis focused on bags and gender—just the talent we needed to start a women’s line. We resolved to launch with a few elegant essentials and add to the line every few months.”
PERALTA’s debut bag, the Balani Backpack, works in conjunction with an optional Etta accessory pouch and leather key tether, each of which can attach to an interior loop at the top of the women's backpack. This set gives a hint of the line’s future direction—items that complement each other but also work well separately. Keys can be accessed in seconds and left connected to the backpack to eliminate car lockouts. The versatile Etta pouch can act as a clutch, a make-up bag, or case to organize chargers and cords.
“I analyzed hi-tech backpacks for women and used what I learned to create the Balani’s S-shaped straps for ultimate comfort,” explained Amyel Oliveros, PERALTA Creative Director. “They distribute the load evenly and avoid the chest area, while gently pulling shoulders back to convey a confident stance. The bag extends just to the hip, and it’s narrower than a standard backpack. The dual leather handles are modeled after women’s handbags so professionals can carry the Balani like a briefcase into meetings. It’s truly a beautiful bag.”
Other thoughtful touches include a gold interior liner and an opening that peels back—like a “banana peel”—making it easy to retrieve items in the main compartment quickly and easily. A built-in protective laptop sleeve safely stows a computer or tablet, a leather bottom adds structure, and side pockets hold essentials like a water bottle and phone for quick access.
