AccuVein is a hand-held, noninvasive device that helps cosmetic physicians like Dr. Buckley locate and avoid veins that they might not otherwise see during cosmetic procedures—from filler injections and Botox, to facelifts. “We don’t have to touch the skin to use the AccuVein. For example, when we’re injecting fillers into the nasolabial fold and inadvertently hit a vein, the patient might have a lot more bruising than if we were to avoid that vein. While injectables, such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, are generally safe, there have been rare reports of facial muscle paralysis from neurotoxin treatment. The problem occurs when the neurotoxin migrates, traveling from the injection site to a facial muscle or elsewhere. As a result, the unintended muscle might relax, causing such problems as a droopy eye or temporary problems with speech or swallowing. AccuVein helps to avoid this rare complication by making visible the very veins that can transport the neurotoxins to where they don’t belong.

The technology works like this: Hemoglobin in the blood absorbs the infrared laser light from the AccuVein technology. Simply holding the device above the treatment area is enough to make veins under the skin appear noticeably different than surrounding tissue.
“AccuVein’s vein illumination can be used to locate and avoid veins during many other types of cosmetic procedures. In sclerotherapy, for example, a procedure we do to eliminate leg veins, the device helps us find the source of feeder veins. We can do a more targeted, effective treatment, minimizing discomfort and bruising for the patient,” he says.
