NextAdvisor.com, a leading consumer and small business information website, revealed the results of its annual diet meal delivery program taste test. Currently in its sixth year, the 2016 Diet Taste Test found Jenny Craig to be the winner for the second year in a row with a perfect 5-star rating. In addition to taste, this blind, independent test also asked tasters to rate the diet food on appearance and serving size. The results of this test, when paired with NextAdvisor.com’s complete reviews of diet delivery services, are intended to help potential dieters find the best service for their situation, including weight loss goals, lifestyle and health concerns.
The NextAdvisor.com diet taste test features breakfast, lunch and dinner meals from Jenny Craig, 17 Day Diet, bistroMD, Diet-to-Go, Nutrisystem, Fresh n' Lean and HMR Weight Management — the last two being newcomers to the test. All of the food was ordered anonymously, as regular consumers would, unbeknownst to the companies and paid for out of pocket. A panel of 14 men and women then tried the food and were asked to provide a rating on a scale of 1 to 5 for taste, appearance and serving size as well as any additional comments. To keep the results completely unbiased, the tasters did not see anything other than the food itself and a description of what each meal was composed of — all packaging and company names were not revealed anytime during the test.
"In order to provide a level playing field, all of the meals were prepared the same way, in a microwave, and then plated on simple dishware for the tasting," said NextAdvisor.com writer Jessa Barron said. "Each taster on the panel first rated the food on appearance and serving size, then tasted each meal and rated it on how appetizing it was."
Comments on the food itself ranged from the brutally honest, "Tastes like rubber," to the refreshingly positive, "I would eat this every morning!"
Once all the results were tallied up, Jenny Craig beat all the competition for the second consecutive year. Not falling far behind was 17 Day Diet, followed by a three-way tie between Diet-to-Go, bistroMD (winner of the 2014 Diet Taste Test) and Nutrisystem. Closing out the results were HMR Weight Management and Fresh n' Lean, which ranked sixth and seventh in the test, respectively.
Although taste is an important factor when it comes to selecting a diet program to follow, there are other things to take into consideration too. Plan prices, plan structure, fitness tools as well as personal support were other things (in addition to the taste test results) NextAdvisor.com reviewed to determine the overall ratings for each diet delivery program.
