Trust Company seminar features National Cyber Security expert on protecting your family and business from hackers.

Firewalls today look like Swiss cheese.

Online shopping is on the rise, and so is cyber crime. On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at 4:30 PM, the Trust Company, a Chicago-area wealth management firm, will host a cyber-security seminar at NIU Naperville.

Open to the public, the one-hour event will feature Jerry Irvine, a national expert in combating cyber crime. Irvine is a member of the National Cyber Security Task Force, a joint operation between the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce responsible for advising on cyber security policy. The seminar promises to offer practical help on preventing cyber attacks, whether on families or business owners.

Over Thanksgiving, online sales jumped 26% from a year earlier. Online buyers often use multiple devices in the buying process and thus expose themselves to hackers, especially through unsecured wireless connections, the hole through which hackers creep in.

“Firewalls today look like Swiss cheese,” says Jerry Irvine, CIO and partner of Prescient Solutions, a Chicago-area IT staffing firm.

Families and businesses are especially vulnerable. According to Irvine, most commonly these hacks are a result of phishing, the activity of defrauding an online user of financial information by posing as a legitimate company. Irvine says the average person receives 75 phishing scams a day and clicks on 25 of them. Surreptitiously, phishers gain access to your system and use malware to tap into financial information you thought was secure.

Irvine’s expertise on cyber security has been featured in a number of national and industry publications including The New York Times, WGN Radio, and Wired magazine.

To register for the event, RSVP by January 22nd to Paula Brennan at 630-545-2200 or via email to pbrennan(at)trustwealthadvisors(dot)com.
