Health and Wellness Coach Week Kicks-Off with Capitol Hill Briefing and Petition Supporting Fastest Growing Profession
Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 11, 2016 -- As millions of Americans enter 2016 with resolutions ranging from new exercise routines to healthier eating habits and better lifestyle choices, this year’s Health and Wellness Coach Week is being kicked-off today with a Capitol Hill briefing sponsored by the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and titled, “Turning New Year’s Resolutions Into Lasting Positive Change.” Championed by a bipartisan group of members of Congress, Health and Wellness Coach Week runs from today, January 11th through Friday, January 17th, 2016.
“Now more than ever, we need to recognize the contributions of health and wellness coaches and lend them support as they continue to inspire positive behavior changes that will dramatically lower our nation’s health care costs,” stated Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ).
Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Rep. Mark Takai (D-HI), Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY), and Rep. Ed. Perlmutter (D-CO) have introduced the Health and Wellness Coach Resolution (H. Res. 552) in the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize the vital work performed by Health Coaches working to combat the global health crisis.
“We are in the midst of a global health crisis. For the first time in history children will likely have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Sadly, of the $4 trillion spent on healthcare in the U.S. this year, only 2% goes towards prevention,” says United States Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH). “Preventive chronic diseases are costing us billions. It is imperative that we fight this epidemic with education and smarter lifestyle choices.
Nationally, the number of self-identified health and wellness coaches has reached approximately 35,000 practitioners, and the Department of Labor projects a 21% increase (faster than all other occupations) for health and wellness professionals focused on preventive health.
To support the bipartisan congressional resolution and lend support for the nation’s fastest growing profession, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition has also launched a petition encouraging the public to sign on in support. The petition can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/u-s-house-of-representatives-support-the-health-coach-resolution-in-congress.
“The importance of healthy living transcends borders. Health and wellness are vital regardless of age, gender, nationality, or religious affiliation,” said Joshua Rosenthal, Founder, Director, and Primary Teacher of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. “Receiving recognition from U.S. Congress on the important work Health Coaches are doing fuels my drive to continue my life’s mission to fight chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes with education and healthier and happier lifestyle choices.”
Rosenthal also penned an op-ed on this important subject appearing in The Hill’s Congress Blog today.
Rosenthal created IIN 25 years ago, anticipating a global health crisis. Today, IIN is the world’s largest nutrition school with over 60,000 students and graduates from over 122 countries. The school is dedicated to offering the best Health Coach Training Program taught by world-class educators, industry leaders, and activists and to changing the landscape of health and wellness around the world. Each graduate is armed with the tools they need to make an impact in their communities.
Throughout Health and Wellness Coach Week, IIN will work to secure signatures on the Health and Wellness Coach Resolution Petition. In addition, IIN will host health coaching and cooking demonstrations on Capitol Hill with top graduates to further inspire members of Congress to support the resolution. IIN will also celebrate graduates and visiting teachers worldwide with meet-ups, live stream events, Instagram takeovers, and lifestyle tips and profiles on successful Health Coaches across its social media channels:
