South Carolina Board of Arbitrator and Mediator Certification certifies Ruth L. Cate to serve as a Family Court Mediator in divorce, child custody and other family law matters

Spartanburg family law attorney Ruth L. Cate has been certified as a Family Court Mediator by the South Carolina Board of Arbitrator and Mediator Certification. Certification is made under the auspices of the Board and the South Carolina Supreme Court Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution, both of which are housed within the South Carolina Bar. Certified Family Court Mediators are authorized to conduct mediations requested by the courts or members of the general public needing help resolving a divorce, child custody dispute or other family law matter.

Family Court Mediation is an informal process in which a trained third-party serves as a neutral mediator to facilitate discussions between parties so that they can better understand each other's needs and reach a practical agreement on the matter before them. Following a successful mediation, the mediator is able to submit the parties' agreement to the court for approval. If mediation is unsuccessful, the parties are free to proceed in litigation, hopefully with the issues in dispute narrowed down and with a better understanding and appreciation of the differences that remain.

The Family Court Mediator certification process in South Carolina is based on factors such as an attorney's years in practice and experience in active litigation, as well as mediation experience in terms of number of mediations attended and number of mediations conducted as a neutral. The Board also looks at an applicant's membership and positions held in The South Carolina Bar along with alternative dispute resolution organizations and other professional associations. Successful applicants are members in good standing with The Bar who have no pending disciplinary complaints, and who have successfully completed a minimum of 40 hours of training in a Board-approved family court mediation training program.

Ruth Cate and the other attorneys and staff at The Cate Law Firm look forward to continuing to serve the people of Spartanburg regarding their family law needs and are pleased to be able to provide additional services as a South Carolina Certified Family Court Mediator.
