C. H. Fenstermaker & Associates, L.L.C. recently announced a major accomplishment by one of its valued team members. Lafayette Project Engineer Robert Miller has earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Miller is a Professional Engineer and has been with the Fenstermaker firm for over 9 years. He also holds several degrees in the field of applied mathematics and civil engineering with an emphasis on problems dealing with the environment.
Dr. Miller’s research focuses on the development of numerical models which deal with how structured populations (e.g., phytoplankton, fish, insects, and people) interact with their environment. Applications include modeling the rise and collapse of an algae bloom, or the long-term impacts of sub-lethal exposure to toxic contaminants and pathogens on fish and amphibian populations. He also has 10 years of experience designing programs and collecting data in the field, installing and maintaining monitoring instrumentation, field construction techniques, and quality control of the measurements.
He also has experience applying off-the-shelf software (e.g., HEC-RAS, MIKE 21, etc.) to analyze watersheds and coastal marsh systems for the purposes of risk identification, mapping and communication, and habitat restoration. At Fenstermaker his team specializes in floodplain development design and FEMA permitting, design and improvement of drainage systems, and basic drainage design.
Over the years, Dr. Miller has worked on numerous projects including the Calcasieu Parish Stormwater Master Plan, Hydro-Ecological Modeling of the Lower Mississippi River, the FEMA Model Analysis and Review, and the OCPR Myrtle Grove Sediment Diversion. These projects were instrumental in assessing water resources issues throughout the State of Louisiana. The projects included field investigations, data collection and processing, and sophisticated modeling to determine scientific alternatives and logically uncover proper solutions for resource management.
