Hammerhouse LLC., a national mortgage recruiting firm, has launched its annual survey of Originator's Opinions. For 6 years, the survey has served as an insight into the opinions and sentiments of industry insiders and their predictions for the coming year.

The Hammerhouse annual survey covers the Six Core Components: Leadership, Culture, Business, Operations, Technology and Geography.

Hammerhouse LLC, an expanding national recruiting and strategic growth firm for the financial services industry with mortgage sales and leadership placement at its core, launched today its Sixth Annual Survey of Originators’ Opinions, which has become the leading source of loan originator opinions on critical issues facing the mortgage industry and impacting their production and job performance. The Annual Survey of Originators’ Opinions has become a key resource for leaders and mortgage lenders as they focus on supporting, attracting, hiring and retaining top production talent with relationship-based, transferable books of business.

“Over the last several years, the Mortgage Industry and its Originators have gotten used to a dynamic business environment that includes the normal ups and downs of the markets, along with a constant stream of regulatory and compliance additions and changes that have created an impact, to say the least,” commented Eric Levin, Managing Partner of Hammerhouse. He continued, “2016 will be another year where we will see overall volume contraction, with the vast majority of originations coming in the form of purchase activity and very little low hanging refinance fruit. To that extent, those originators and companies that are focused on “blocking and “tackling”...those whose strengths lie in the foundational Core Components, will have a clear opportunity to gain significant market share while those looking for a magic bullet will be sure to experience compression.”

“We appreciate the time of those that put effort into our annual survey and encourage everyone to participate. The results are direct indicators from the source, directly from the street, as to what Core Components stand out the most and what will most impact the business overall in 2016,” concluded Mr. Levin.

The Hammerhouse annual survey covers the Six Core Components we evaluate during the Model Match process within the mortgage origination industry: Leadership, Culture, Business, Operations, Technology and Geography. All mortgage loan originators (bank, mortgage bank, correspondent or broker) are invited to complete the survey. Answers are confidential and will only appear in an aggregate analysis. Results of the survey are used to educate lenders and vendors on the perceptions of loan officers, and to advocate for improvements that will benefit loan officers, leaders, lenders and consumers.

The Hammerhouse Fifth Annual Survey of Originators’ Opinions released in early 2015 demonstrated:

  •             Regulatory issues replaced market concerns to return as the biggest challenge facing the mortgage industry.

  •          Even though half of originators did not quite meet their 2014 production goals, the large majority of responders expected higher production in 2015.

  •          While job satisfaction was slightly down, most responders still found their job to be rewarding.

  •          Originators planned to take advantage of co-marketing and branding with referral partners to meet their production goals

  •          On the subject of local managers, originators were almost evenly split between expecting them to help escalate operational issues & just wanting them to “get out of their way."

This year’s survey will continue to track trends in originator opinions across the Six Core Components, but also focus on originator views at the street level. Hammerhouse believes that current trends suggest originators who are aligned with a firm that is Vertically Model Matched for their market will continue to excel with customers and referral partners at the local level and will be best positioned to outperform peers.
