This comprehensive course goes beyond traditional line sweep and PIM testing and provides all the knowledge in order to test and evaluate RF signals that begin at the output of a radio transmitter and eventually are propagated into the air to a receiver.

Professionals in wireless communications realize the increasing usage of mobile devices causes significant growth in wireless traffic. This expansion necessitates the addition of certified professionals to install, maintain, support and design communications systems. To meet this demand, ETA® International will host a Line and Antenna Sweep (LAS) hands-on training workshop March 20 - 21, conducted by IWA Technical Services during Education Forum, co-locating with International Wireless Telecommunications Expo (IWCE).

This class begins with basic theory of antennas and transmission lines, and concludes with hands-on applications of everyday problems found in the field. This workshop will not only prepare the student for the ETA Line and Antenna Sweep certification exam, but also provides an in-depth study of the interworking of antennas and transmission lines.

“Designed for beginners as well as senior-level technicians and engineers, this comprehensive two-day hands-on course goes beyond traditional line sweep and PIM testing and provides all the knowledge in order to test and evaluate RF signals that begin at the output of a radio transmitter and eventually are propagated into the air to a receiver,” said Ira Wiesenfeld, P. E., CETsr, IWA Technical Services.

Discussions will include antenna types, mounting techniques, propagation, gain and losses, decibels, pattern distortions, SWR, return loss, distance-to-fault, range, impedance matching, bandwidth, efficiency, power levels , static and dynamic down tilt, selecting the correct components for optimal results, beam width, polarization, mixed use towers, and transmission lines selection. We will also discuss when a transmission line becomes an antenna, antenna diversity, splitters, couplers, taps, and lightning protection. Finally, the session will cover testing before, during and after installation, which testing equipment not to use, common faults and misconceptions, multi-band applications, velocity factor, peripheral equipment such as: filters, isolators, tower top amplifiers, site construction, workmanship, and intermodulation.

Hands-on exercises will include applications of everyday problems found in the field such as: testing fundamentals, reflectometers, RF watt meters, calibration, determining problems, distance-to-fault measurements, system sweeps, FDR operation and troubleshooting.

“ETA prepares attendees to become competent and qualified LAS professionals certified to meet the increasing demand to expand the wireless network footprint,” said ETA President Teresa Maher, CSS.
