Local sporting hero Jonathan Joseph officially opens David Lloyd's Newbury's top health, sports and leisure club

Bath and England Rugby star and local sporting hero Jonathan Joseph, today officially opened the new David Lloyd Leisure club in Newbury. After hosting a DL Kids activity session with local youngsters, he cut the ribbon alongside David Lloyd Leisure’s Chief Executive Glenn Earlham to declare the premier health and leisure club officially open.

Bath and England Rugby star and local sporting hero Jonathan Joseph, today officially opened the new David Lloyd Leisure club in Newbury. After hosting a DL Kids activity session with local youngsters, he cut the ribbon alongside David Lloyd Leisure’s Chief Executive Glenn Earlham to declare the premier health and leisure club officially open.

The club has proved to be a big hit amongst the residents of Newbury with nearly 3000 members already signed up before the doors opened last month. The club is David Lloyd Leisure’s 92nd club and represents an investment of £9.3m, creating more than 70 new jobs locally.

Situated next to Newbury Rugby Club on Monks Lane, David Lloyd Newbury offers the whole family unrivalled facilities, services and programmes to achieve their health and fitness goals.

The construction company Pellikaan worked flat-out to ensure a smooth completion of the new 3,300 sqm club, which provides facilities including extensive tennis and sports facilities, a state-of-the-art fitness area featuring the latest in gym innovation and a dedicated zone for children’s activities.

Jonathan Joseph said: “It’s great to be returning to my home town to officially open the new David Lloyd Club. Sport and fitness was such a huge part of my childhood, and it’s been fantastic to meet and offer encouragement to the next generation of aspiring sports stars.

“It really is impressive and a great asset to the Newbury community as a whole. Not only does it offer state of the art fitness, tennis and leisure facilities, but it’s also a welcome boost to local jobs.”

Paul McNicholas, David Lloyd Newbury’s general manager said, “Jonathan is a local sporting hero and a fantastic role model for the youngsters of Newbury, and we are delighted that he was able to join us for our official opening. Since we first opened our doors last month we have been overwhelmed with the warmth and enthusiasm from the residents of Newbury community.

“The state of the art health and leisure facilities have proved to be a big hit with local families, couples and friends wanting to exercise and socialise both together and on their own and we look forward to welcoming many more members into our club over the next few months and into the future.”

The club provides outdoor tennis courts, including all-weather bubble protection, offering families some of the best tennis facilities, programmes and expertise in the region. David Lloyd Leisure’s Tennis All Stars exclusive junior coaching programme, accredited by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), is available to children aged 3-11 years, while adults have access to instruction from a dedicated team of LTA-qualified qualified coaches. The racquets facilities also include two squash courts.

The swimming facilities comprise both indoor and outdoor heated pools, offering a range of activities including aqua aerobics, family swim times and quiet adult swim sessions. David Lloyd Leisure’s Swim All Stars programme for children is taught by a team of qualified coaches, catering for all abilities from absolute beginners to advanced improvers.

A key feature in the club is the 600 sqm gym, which will house David Lloyd Leisure’s cutting-edge gym concept incorporating the latest design and technology, coupled with an unrivalled array of best-in-class equipment. The gym offers members the best environment, equipment and experience to support them in achieving their health and fitness goals. To complement the gym, a full programme of group exercise classes will cater for a broad range of tastes and abilities. At the club you’ll find three group exercise studios, one dedicated to the popular class of indoor cycling while the others will offer high impact and mind and body classes. Other facilities will include a wet spa area, providing a relaxing haven where adult members will be able to de-stress and unwind.
