The need for specialized care for drug and alcohol abuse is growing. According to the 2015 Behavioral Health Barometer, United States Annual Report an estimated 17 million people were dependent on or abused alcohol in the past year. However, only 7.6% of those individuals sought out treatment. An additional 7.1 million people were dependent or abused illicit drugs in the same year. Of those individuals 14.6% received treatment.

While substance abuse affects both men and women, a three-year study conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University revealed that girls and young women use substances for different reasons than boys and young men. The study found that risk factors such as low self-esteem, peer pressure, and depression make young women more vulnerable to substance use and substance disorders. Thus, the path out of addiction for women is also very different.

Mental health professionals Ann Koetting and Paige Tuck recognized that there were very few options for women seeking private treatment. This was the motivator to design and develop a program that offered specialized one-on-one services with the utmost concern for privacy. Koetting said, “Being able to help the first women successfully complete the program is very encouraging. It is exciting to see firsthand that our treatment model is working.”
