SAE International Honors Professor Nadir Yilmaz with the Excellence in Engineering Education Award
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) February 05, 2016 -- SAE International honors Dr. Nadir Yilmaz, Professor, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, with the 2016 Excellence in Engineering Education Award.
This award annually recognizes outstanding contributions made by an individual toward activities related to the SAE Education Board (EB). The award is given for any of the following types of service: promotion of SAE International student activities at the international or local levels, contributions that advance engineering education, contributions in support of the SAE Collegiate Design competitions, and promotion of educational related activities at any level.
A native of Turkey, Dr. Yilmaz, received his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Bradley University and New Mexico State University, respectively. He has been a noted author of 100 publications in the fields of combustion, CFD, rocket propellants, renewable energy and internal combustion engines.
Currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Dr. Yilmaz also is a State of New Mexico licensed professional engineer (PE) and consultant. He has established both research and teaching laboratories, and advised numerous underrepresented minority and female students under the New Mexico AMP (Alliance for Minority Participation) program. Dr. Yilmaz is an active member of SAE International, ASME, ASEE, and NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers).
Within NSPE, he is the Southwest Regional Vice Chair of the Higher Education Interest Group, a member of NSPE Membership Board, and ex-officio member of NSPE Young Engineers Resource Group. He also serves as the editor-in-chief for the SAE International Journal of Fuels and Lubricants, is a committee member on the SAE ABET Board, and is the Vice Chair of SAE Education Board. In 2011, he won the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, to recognize and honor young engineering educators who are successfully preparing student engineers for the task of properly integrating into mainstream society and the engineering profession, making him the first educator from a New Mexico Institution to receive this award. Dr. Yilmaz also serves as VP for Education for New Mexico State Society of Professional Engineers (NMSPE), and was the Past President of NMSPE–Albuquerque Chapter and Chair of ASME –New Mexico Section. He is the 2014 NSPE National Young Engineer of the Year, an award not bestowed upon a New Mexico engineer since 1979.
