In honor of the 50th anniversary of the airing of the final episode in the Mister Ed TV series, author Timm Boyle has released Volume 1 of a novel about a talking horse.

"I loved watching Mister Ed as a kid and I would find myself wondering what it would be like if animals really could talk."

February 6, 2016, marks the 50th anniversary of the original airing of the final episode in the beloved Mister Ed television series (1961-66). Honoring the memory of the show, Kenosha, Wis.-based author Timm Boyle has published a new soft science fiction novel titled Bamboo Harvester: An Extraordinary Horse’s Quest to Save a Civilization – Volume 1.

Released last week and priced at 99 cents, the e-book is available at http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Harvester-Extraordinary-Horses-Civilization-ebook/dp/B01B8MZW7O/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1454125955&sr=1-1&keywords=bamboo+harvester. “Bamboo Harvester” was the name of the actual horse that played Mister Ed in the TV series.

“I loved watching Mister Ed as a kid, and I would find myself wondering what it would be like if animals – including my pet dog – really could talk,” Boyle said. “A couple years ago I noticed that we were approaching the 50th anniversary of the last episode in the series. I decided to write a novel about a talking horse from a solar system five light years away who comes to Earth with the intent of helping his owners save their doomed civilization, but who gets sidetracked upon his arrival with the desire to become a Hollywood star.”

Wrapping itself in the themes of bravery, sacrifice and redemption, this imaginative and heartwarming novel tells the story of an alien civilization facing extermination, the courageous efforts of a few determined souls seeking to save future generations, the blind luck of a down-and-out Hollywood producer and a talking horse who bridges the gaps between them all.

“The book is geared toward adults and upper teens,” Boyle said. “I believe readers will find themselves cheering on the alien crew trying to reach Earth to find a suitable place where they can relocate, and they’ll be entertained by a horse who evolves from a sweet, stammering, dependent pet into an egotistical, wise-cracking, mischievous colt.”

Boyle is in the process of completing Volume 2 of Bamboo Harvester, scheduled for release in late spring or early summer, and is working on the third and final volume, which he plans to release before the end of the year. He is the author of Total Fitness the NBA Way (HarperCollins) and The Most Valuable Players in Baseball: 1931-2001 (McFarland & Co.).
