Kendal at Ithaca Cuts Ribbon on Newly Expanded and Enhanced Senior Living Community in Upstate New York
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 05, 2016 -- This afternoon in Ithaca, NY, Perkins Eastman will join The Kendal Corporation for the ceremonial ribbon cutting for the first phase of the repositioning and expansion of Kendal at Ithaca, a full-service senior living community situated on a 105-acre campus in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Today’s milestone marks the substantial completion of the provider’s $30 million expansion, which began in 2012, and coincides with the Life Plan Community’s 20th anniversary.
As the marketplace for housing and caring for America’s growing 65+ population continues to expand, providers are recognizing the increasing need—with the guidance of design firms like Perkins Eastman—for specialized offerings such as skilled nursing as well as expanded amenities in their communities, from diverse dining options to integrated healthcare services. Today, Kendal makes good on its commitment to expanding opportunities for sustainability and resident wellness with the unveiling of its repositioned community, which now boasts a new inviting entrance and reception area, expanded fitness center, new casual dining bistro, 24 new high-end apartments for independent living, and most importantly, a new skilled nursing center, which replaces the original care center. In phase 2, the former nursing rooms will be converted to an enlarged health clinic for the community.
Kendal at Ithaca’s new single-story skilled nursing center was designed on the neighborhood model, in which the center is divided into three distinct neighborhoods, each with its own kitchen and pantry, dining and living rooms, and 16 private resident rooms with sensitively designed outdoor space. This layout enables residents to, according to Stephen Bailey, Project Director of The Kendal Corporation, “thrive in a culture where participating is valued and care is customized to meet the changing needs and preferences of every individual.” In addition to the new buildings and facilities, Perkins Eastman also has planned interior and exterior renovations to Kendal’s main dining room and common areas.
Richard Rosen AIA, LEED AP, Principal with Perkins Eastman and the project’s design lead, says, “Throughout our many discussions with Kendal about their future needs, and the ensuing design process, the team consistently placed the emphasis on expanding resident choice and wellness. This meant not only offering modern amenities and the highest standard of care, but also a commitment to environmental stewardship. In all these regards, Kendal at Ithaca is now a model community.”
Perkins Eastman’s master plan also introduced a variety of new passive and active outdoor courtyards, and an expansion of the community’s preexisting walking paths, all in an effort to promote the myriad benefits of walkable communities, wherein residents interact on a daily basis.
