Ultimate Selfies: The Grayson School Pictured from Space

Share Article

Pennsylvania’s first independent gifted school will be taking the ultimate selfie. From February 8-12 Grayson students will participate in the Sally Ride EarthKAM Mission in collaboration with NASA and the International Space Station.

The Grayson school has been chosen by NASA to direct the EarthKam cameras on the International Space Station this upcoming week. EarthKAM is a NASA educational outreach program that encourages all curious minds to learn about Earth from the unique perspective of space.  During the Sally Ride EarthKAM mission, students will be able to request images of specific locations on Earth. Grayson students have chosen to see a view of their school from space.

As part of their typical school day, Grayson students have interdisciplinary project time every day—from conducting an archaeological dig to using a 3D printer to create working machines. To coincide with our Sally Ride EarthKAM mission, the student project this unit will be a Mars rover exploration simulation. Our Projects Director, Ms. Ally O'Rourke-Barrett, has divided students into three groups and given jobs based on three different locales: students in ground control will be responsible for monitoring the progress of the mission and controlling communications with the Space Station; those in the Space Station will be responsible for acting as the intermediary between ground control and the Mars robotics team, in addition to performing the necessary functions for surviving aboard the station; finally, those in the Mars robotics lab will be responsible for navigating a Mars rover on an expedition to collect and analyze Martian soil samples.

Press are invited to join our families at the Grayson School in launching our Mars rover exploration simulated mission on February 26 at 2pm, on our inaugural 100th day of school!
