“I wear red for my mother-in-law Armella, twenty-five years ago she left us much too soon. She appeared a healthy and loving mother and grandmother yet one day things halted and our lives were forever changed."

Mending broken hearts! This month, Cupid takes aim for lovers. American Hearth Month is all about raising awareness by wearing red to decrease deaths evoked by heart disease and stroke.
It is evident that this is a prevailing health concern for both men and women. In fact, every minute a person passes away from coronary heart disease. This being the very reason as to why this is the foremost cause of death within the United States. For a broader realization of the impact heart disease has in the United States, understand that each year 630,000 people pass away from it. The numbers are telling, however, it is apparent that many are unaware of what they can do to reduce their risks. For many justifiable reasons heart disease has been given the nickname the “silent killer“ due to the fact that most symptoms remain unapparent until it is far too late. However, heart disease does not necessarily have to become one’s sentence to death. We can all take initiatives to guard our hearts by pursuing proper medical care promptly. Development of knowledge, raised awareness, lifestyle choices and being well-informed in regards to what needs to be done if you believe someone is indeed suffering from a heart attack before you. For this can have a significant impact in the prevention of heart disease or saving someone’s life.
February is the month of love, and is an ideal time to draw greater attention to and raise awareness for heart disease. Speaking about heart disease and its impact it has had on himself and his family is PinMart’s Director Steve Geyer: “I wear red for my mother-in-law Armella, twenty-five years ago she left us much too soon. She appeared a healthy and loving mother and grandmother yet one day things halted and our lives were forever changed. Unbeknownst to us and even her was the knowledge that she was born with a heart defect that ultimately lead to the tearing of the two chambers between her heart. Back then regular testing and heart disease wasn’t a table topic however, today things have changed and now each February we celebrate her life and wear our heart disease awareness ribbon pin in her honor to raise awareness for heart disease that is very much so the silent killer.”
The utmost important stride towards a healthier heart is to quit smoking. Everyone is aware of the hazards accompanied with smoking however, quitting and choosing to say no to smoking initially is difficult for many. In addition to smoking, other risk factors for heart disease include: poor diet, lack of exercise, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. All of which can be managed. In end it comes down to you to take initiative. This Valentines Day, why not give your heart a simple gift? The gift of health.
