With Penguin on the horizon, there is simply too much at stake to learn SEO by trial and error

Digital agency Brown Box Branding Seattle's team of experienced website developers has been working tirelessly through February to help business owners and website managers prepare for Google’s imminent Penguin update. Now, the agency is issuing a warning to business owners, many of whom may not even realize a major update is coming soon.

"At Brown Box Branding, we celebrate the winning spirit of do-it-yourselfer's," says Colby Richards, Managing Partner at Brown Box Branding Seattle. However, there is a time to know when to call a professional. As we talked about in a recent blog post on our site, SEO is one of those times. With Penguin on the horizon, there is simply too much at stake to learn SEO by trial and error."

The update, which the leading search engine says will be released some time in the first quarter of 2016, is focused primarily on a website’s links.

"This new evolution of the Google Penguin algorithm really brings the quality of a website's links into focus,” explains Richards.

Rather than basing search engine rankings on the sheer number of links to a particular website, the new update will take the quality and toxicity of those links into account and offer ways for webmasters to counteract them.

“It further stresses the importance of quality website backlinks while simultaneously offering tools to weed out the undesirable backlinks that may have become associated with a website," continues Richards.

However, Brown Box Branding cautions against diving head first without an in-depth understanding of the update.

"While this update has the potential to lift websites with quality backlinks to new heights, differentiating between the backlinks helping and the backlinks hurting your site is a task best left to the pros," says Richards. "In the wrong-but-well-intending hands, these tools will allow individuals to remove backlinks that Google actually sees as a quality backlink, thus hurting a site's rankings."

Brown Box Branding encourages do-it-yourselfer's to proceed with caution and strongly consider the added value and protections that come with hiring a reputable SEO firm.
