Accounting management and consulting firm SUM Innovation has hired Alexis McClellan as its director of sales to ramp up its broker-dealer and staffing divisions and expand the firm’s market reach, including SUM’s expansion into other U.S. markets beyond New York City.

New York-based accounting management and consulting firm SUM Innovation is expanding its team. After pairing up with HireEffect to relaunch its staffing division and expanding its broker-dealer services led by CPA Michael Davison earlier this year, the innovative accounting practice has welcomed Alexis McClellan into the director of sales role. CEO Mathew Heggem brought McClellan into the SUM Innovation fold at a crucial time.

“Growth is exponential, and Alexis is really going to be pushing these new divisions, expanding SUM Innovation’s market reach,” said Heggem. “We’re going to reach parameters we never thought were possible.”

Hailing from Los Angeles, McClellan has a strong sales background. After working with ADP straight out of school, she spent six formative years at Paychex. There, she helped mold the emerging market in Nevada. From the small payroll division of Paychex, Alexis made the leap to New York to work for Paylocity, where she eventually connected with Heggem.

“I had a lot of respect for SUM Innovation when I met Mathew four years ago,” said McClellan. “I actually used to refer clients to SUM Innovation all the time. They were all about solutions. Their selling was always value-based. In short, I knew they were doing good work, and I had 110 percent faith in their services.”

When Alexis decided it was time to leave Paylocity in search of a new creative opportunity, SUM Innovation was the first to grab her. McClellan’s range of experiences — from educating small startups about FICA tax to selling national companies with 2,000 employees — gives her unique insight, which she plans to bring to SUM Innovation in the exciting time of change ahead.

“SUM Innovation isn’t afraid to pivot,” said McClellan. “It’s not afraid of technology. It’s not scared of change. The fact that the SUM team is on the forefront of ‘sexy accounting’ is very attractive to me.”
