'SLCC Promise' Making College Affordable for All
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) March 03, 2016 -- SLCC Promise is Salt Lake Community College’s new institution-wide initiative to provide financial access to higher education for students and members of the community. SLCC Promise is a commitment to provide tuition and fees for qualified, full-time students who are interested in setting and meeting educational goals.
“The SLCC Promise aligns with our mission of inclusive and transformative education by offering access to more college-bound students,” said SLCC President Deneece G. Huftalin. “The initiative is modeled on successful scholarship assistance that provides pathways for students to successfully attend college and complete their higher education goals and move confidently into their careers.”
To qualify for SLCC Promise funds, applicants commit to take a full load of courses—12 to 18 credit hours—and must be eligible for federal financial assistance. SLCC Promise money is available to qualifying students who have met with an advisor to develop a two-year degree plan. The “promise” in SLCC Promise is that the College will cover the cost of tuition and fees when federal grants for eligible students fall short, ensuring an education pathway for students who might otherwise veer away from completing a higher education.
“SLCC Promise expands access to higher education – plain and simple,” said Nancy Singer, SLCC associate vice president for Student Success and Completion. “By removing financial barriers to post secondary education, we hope that more community members will take advantage of all that Salt Lake Community College has to offer.”
Funding for SLCC Promise is being made possible by incorporating innovative management practices while combining student aid, scholarship money and institutional resources. It’s estimated that as many as 14,000 Utah residents may eventually benefit from SLCC’s ability to effectively provide a fully supported community college pathway. SLCC is committed to guiding people through the application process for those interested in taking advantage of SLCC Promise.
“At the heart of SLCC Promise is an institutional investment in students. It is not complicated,” said Eric D. Weber, SLCC assistant vice president for Student Enrollment. “If a Pell Grant eligible student commits to attend full time with a planned pathway to completion, Salt Lake Community College will clear away the financial obstacles that can interrupt one’s education. This commitment is not just to start college, but continues through to a student’s expected completion. By changing access to even one individual, we change a family and change a community.”
