Abington Hospital's Cancer Program Earns Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for Second Time
Abington, PA (PRWEB) March 02, 2016 -- The Rosenfeld Cancer Center at Abington Hospital is pleased to announce that it has earned an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for the second time. Abington is one of only eight programs nationwide to earn this award two survey cycles in a row (2012 and 2015). Award criteria were based on accreditation surveys conducted during the second half of 2015.
The CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer treatment programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives this award following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program. The facility must also receive a compliance rating for the remaining 26 standards.
The standards that form the basis of the OAA criteria are drawn from the following areas of program activity:
• cancer committee leadership
• cancer data management
• clinical services
• quality improvement
According to Daniel P. McKellar, MD, FACS, chair of the CoC, “More and more, we’re finding that patients and their families want to know how the healthcare institutions in their communities compare with one another."
“They want access to information in terms of who’s providing the best quality of care, and they want to know about overall patient outcomes,” he said. “Through this recognition program, I’d like to think we’re playing a small, but vital role, in helping them make informed decisions on their cancer care.”
The 27 award-winning, cancer treatment programs represent approximately 11 percent of programs surveyed by the CoC from July 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015, according to the Commission on Cancer.
“We are all extremely proud of this achievement and the work we do collaboratively to care for our patients,” said Mark Shahin, MD, interim director, The Rosenfeld Cancer Center. “It is a privilege to work side-by-side a team wholly dedicated to providing high quality and personalized oncology care to each and every one of our patients.”
