HPCNY Helped Generate $20 Million for New York State Businesses

High Performance Computing Consortium is paving the way for NY innovators.

As part of its continued efforts to support small to medium-sized enterprises, New York’s High Performance Computing Consortium (HPCNY) is looking forward to assisting more companies with their technology and R&D needs in 2016.

Small and medium-sized enterprises make up a significant portion of New York’s economy, but they tend to face a number of challenges when it comes to accessing the tools and resources they need to effectively bring new products to market or modernize outdated processes. HPCNY helps innovative businesses overcome these roadblocks by providing budget-conscious access to the same high-performance computing resources utilized by large enterprises and research institutions. This is particularly crucial to companies who need to move forward with research and discovery, process and engineering improvement, and product design and development.

“A critical component of our mission at HPCNY is to bring together the collective expertise of New York’s top universities in the use of high performance computation and simulation to provide a competitive advantage for our collaborating industry partners,” says John E. Kolb, Vice President for Information Services and Technology and Chief Information Officer of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Empowering Innovation in New York State

To date, HPCNY has already helped create over $20 million in economic activity in New York State through successful partnerships with companies such as Innoveering, Pliant Energy Systems, Praxair Corporation and Sentient Science. This includes attracting $4 million in federal funding and generating $2 million in increased revenues and cost savings.

Through its work with organizations of all sizes across the state, HPCNY has helped fill an often-overlooked need in New York’s technical sector. As Chief Technologist Benjamin Pietro Filardo of Pliant Energy Systems explains, “The complex operational behavior of Pliant Energy’s highly non-linear mechanical systems can only be modeled with state-of-the-art software and massive processing power normally only available to academia or large businesses. Pliant Energy’s first generator for the Office of Naval Research cleared proof-of-concept with the invaluable aid of HPCNY and the Scientific Computation Research Center at Rensselaer, sponsored by NYSTAR."

These efforts have also directly led to the creation and retention of over 50 jobs at companies that have partnered with HPCNY. In addition, the HPCNY partnership between Sentient Science and the University at Buffalo’s Center of Advanced Technologies and Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences played an important role in Sentient Science’s decision to move its headquarters to Buffalo, New York.

"We would not be able to commercialize our technology, especially at the rate and effectiveness we have, without the University at Buffalo Center for Computational Research,” says Ward Thomas, President and CEO of Sentient Science.
