East Setauket, New York (PRWEB) March 21, 2016 -- The complete PENETRON Specialty Products system of floor prep products was used at the new Stamford Hospital in southwestern Connecticut. Construction is on track to be completed in April 2016, and the first patients will be admitted to this world-class medical facility in mid-2016.
Adjacent to the original Carl & Dorothy Bennett campus, the new Stamford Hospital, estimated at about $450 million, has been completed after a five-year construction phase. The new facility, highlighted by an 11-floor glass-clad medical tower, will have more space for practically every function offered by the previous hospital, including the emergency care center, the Heart and Vascular Institute, and new areas that will enable dedicated treatment for trauma, cardiac distress, mental health and pediatric care.
PRECISE TIMING OF DELIVERIES
The new hospital is approximately twice as large as the existing facility. Due to the dimensions of the project, the logistics – and the fast-track schedule – presented sizeable challenges. Peter Trainor, PENETRON Specialty Products (PSP) Vice President of Sales, explains, “The number of trades working simultaneously at the site demanded clockwork-like timing to get the floors treated and ready for the final covering. We even had to book ahead to bring in materials with the elevator!”
Specified by Fromkin Brothers Painting & Flooring, floor preparation products from PSP were used to treat over 400,000 square feet (37,160 m2) of new concrete floors. Initially, the floor surface was shot-blasted to achieve a concrete surface profile (CSP) value of 3, which was required prior to application of the VB 225 moisture mitigation system.
KEEPING TO THE SCHEDULE
“Normally, it takes 28 days for a new concrete floor to cure,” notes Mr. Trainor. “However, the combination of shot-blasting and treating the concrete with VB 225 reduces the wait time to only five days. This advantage helped keep the project timeline intact.”
Next up was an application of PRIMER STX 100, the optimal bonding agent for the subsequent layer of LEVELINE 15, a self-leveling underlayment that provided a level and flat surface prior to the installation of the final flooring.
PRODUCT QUALITY & PROJECT SUPPORT
“Before the final flooring was installed, the treated floors were sprayed with PENESEAL FH sealant to protect the surface from other trades that were still working everywhere,” adds Mr. Trainor. “As a penetrating densifier, this sealer soaks into the concrete to form a hard, solid mass, protecting the new surface until the final flooring and adhesives are applied.”
“Nora flooring and Patcraft sheet vinyl were specified for the final flooring,” explains Mike Tremitiedi, Operations Manager with Fromkin Brothers Painting & Flooring. “For such quality products, we need equally superior quality and high-performance subfloor products. PSP products not only meet our demands, but from a field level, they are easy to use and we enjoy great support from the PSP team.”
