Schmitto Joins ReliantHeart's Scientific Advisory Board

Schmitto of Hannover Medical School has joined the Scientific Advisory Board for ReliantHeart, the manufacturer of the HeartAssist5® Ventricular Assist Device (VAD). With more than 100 VAD implantations per year, Dr. Schmitto leads one of the largest VAD programs worldwide.
Jan D. Schmitto, MD, PhD, MBA, FCCP, FRCS (Glasg.) is the Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Program at Hannover Medical School, and consultant for the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany.
Dr. Schmitto is a pioneer in minimally-invasive cardiac surgery, having developed and established the minimally-invasive HVAD implantation technique, as well as being the worldwide first surgeon to implant the LVAD "HeartMate 3", and the first surgeon to implant the less invasive HeartAssist5 LVAD.
After finishing medical school in Munster, Germany and Vienna, Austria, Dr. Schmitto completed his cardiothoracic-residency at University Hospital of Gottingen, Germany as one of the youngest cardiothoracic surgeons worldwide. He served as a Fellow in the Division of Cardiac Surgery, Brigham and Women´s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA before he became the Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Program at Hannover Medical School.
Dr. Schmitto’s received several Awards including Penn State Children’s Hospital Young Investigator Award in 2010 as well as the "Presidents Award - Cardiac" from the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS) in 2011.
Cardiac research has always been an integral component of Dr. Schmitto’s academic career, leading to a high number of scientific publications including several book chapters and many first author papers (more than 130 Medline listed scientific publications).
Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for several international professional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery journals. Dr. Schmitto is also member of the MCS-Master Academy as well as a member of the Program Selection Committee of the 2016 Annual Meeting of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).
