Pearson Unveils New Edition of Widely Used Psychological Assessment, Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 15, 2016 -- Today Pearson unveiled the next edition of the Millon® Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI®), providing even more helpful insights into a patient's personality, which allows clinicians to make reliable diagnostic and treatment decisions. Anchored in the personality theories of Theodore Millon, Ph.D., DSc, the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-IV (MCMI-IV) is uniquely equipped to deliver results that are grounded in both theoretically guided principles and sound empirical research. The assessment, used in multiple settings such as clinical and counseling, medical, government and forensic, helps identify deep, pervasive clinical issues; facilitate treatment decisions; and assess disorders aligned with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5®) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10).
Ruth Tully, DForenPsy, director of Tully Forensic Psychology Ltd. in Nottingham, United Kingdom, leads a team of clinical and forensic psychologists that provide psychological assessment and treatment services across the country. Her team regularly uses the MCMI-IV to assess individuals who come to their attention through criminal or risk related behavior as well as those who come for therapy.
Tully said, “The revision of the MCMI-IV was particularly timely, following the revision of widely used diagnostic assessment manuals such as DSM-5. Thus, the results translate well and can be understood more broadly in the context of advances in psychological and psychiatric assessment. A major improvement is the more client-friendly test booklet, which is easier to follow and reduces client response error, resulting in a more accurate picture of their personality.”
The MCMI-IV includes new and updated test items characterizing the evolution of Millon's personality theory, refreshed to increase clarity and clinical relevance, and new and improved narrative content that better integrates results with therapeutic practice and links to personalized treatment. The brevity of the MCMI-IV allows clinicians to maintain an efficient and productive clinical practice. In addition, the newest edition of this widely used clinical assessment is available for digital administration and scoring via Q-global, Pearson’s web-based platform for test administration, scoring and reporting.
Tully said that administering and scoring the MCMI-IV on Q-global saves valuable time and, as a result, money for her practice. She said, “The online scoring also helps with accuracy, as the platform allows a validity check when entering items as an assessor. The on-screen administration is easy for clients to follow, and is similar to other online systems that they may be familiar and comfortable with using.”
The MCMI-IV includes updated Grossman Facet Scales, a series of therapy-guiding facet subscales that expand the basic personality scales of the instrument. Developed by Seth Grossman, PsyD., these facet scales identify the most salient clinical domains (e.g., interpersonal, cognitive) that characterize the patient taking the inventory, helping personalize and individualize the test results. The inventory also now features a Turbulent -- the more severe disorders --- scale that will provide clinicians with a deeper understanding of adult patients experiencing abnormal personality traits, such as a lost sense of reality or unwavering optimism.
Tully said that one of the major improvements when delivering the MCMI-IV with Q-global is the way the scales are displayed within the profile and how they are clearly explained to allow for comparisons and interactions to be considered. She said, “The Q-global generated interpretative report offers several hypotheses as to the nature of the client's difficulties where appropriate. This is useful as it allows me to consider different perspectives and interpretations and to understand the client more effectively as a whole person.”
“As we enhance our clinical assessments, Pearson focuses on ensuring that they map to the most current diagnostic assessment manuals and leverage the power of technology to support delivery and scoring, which saves clinicians crucial time and money,” said Aurelio Prifitera, Ph.D., managing director of Pearson’s clinical assessment group. “In addition, it is important that they build on the widely respected foundations of research of premier experts in psychological assessment, such as Dr. Millon.”
