James Earl Jones, the award winning star of stage and cinema will be hosting an upcoming "Behind the Scenes" segment looking at pet care, and how far today's owners are going to give their companion animals the longest, healthiest, most comfortable lives possible. Among the programs guests will be professionals who work with pets and owners everyday.
It's practically a sure bet that the topic will hit home with viewers since the latest figures show that,as of 2015, 65% of American households count pets as a member, and spent an estimated total of $60.59 billion on their 78 million dogs and 86 million cats over the course of the year. The really astounding thing about this expenditure is that only $15 billion went towards routine veterinary care and $22 billion for food, a large portion of it,specialty brands consisting of gluten free, organic, natural, or raw ingredients, as well as prescription diets meant to manage special medical conditions. The remaining money was spent on services that, as little 20 years ago, would be considered beyond luxury, but today are seen by many owners as necessities: boarding, grooming, doggie day care, pet sitters, dog walkers, acupuncture, massage, winter coats, sweaters, Halloween costumes, and pet portraits. Tune in and find out what the future holds.
"Behind the Scenes" programs are created expressly for distribution to Public Television stations around the nation to be broadcast at their discretion, but are neither written nor produced by either PBS or APT.
