Medford, New Jersey, 8th Grade Student Wins Full Scholarship to Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia
Fork Union, Virginia (PRWEB) March 15, 2016 -- Jacob Wood, an eighth-grader at Medford Memorial Middle School in Medford, New Jersey, has been named the winner of the 2016-2017 Board of Trustees Scholarship at the historic Fork Union Military Academy, the prestigious college preparatory boarding school for boys located in central Virginia. Jacob is the son of Jonathan and Colleen Wood and resides in Medford, New Jersey, where his father is a firefighter with the Cherry Hill Fire Department and his mother works for a medical equipment supplier.
A straight-A student who aspires to attend college at West Point Military Academy, Jacob Wood's resume of academic and athletic accomplishments shows him to be the type of student who will be a credit to the Corps of Cadets at Fork Union Military Academy and continue the legacy of excellence demonstrated by past recipients of the Board of Trustees Scholarship.
Fork Union Military Academy received dozens of applications in recent months from high-quality candidates all around the nation for this single coveted scholarship award. The Board of Trustees Scholarship provides full tuition, room and board, and uniforms for a rising freshman or sophomore until their graduation from Fork Union, provided they maintain required academic and conduct standards. The Scholarship Committee reviewed these applications and narrowed the candidates to a list of three semi-finalists, each of whom were then invited to campus to meet with the selection committee for individual interviews in February.
Competition for this year's scholarship was especially close, with many well-qualified candidates. School officials say they are hopeful that they will be able to provide sufficient financial aid and access scholarship support to help enroll several of the other high-performing students who sought this highly-competitive scholarship.
ABOUT FORK UNION MILITARY ACADEMY
Fork Union Military Academy is a private boarding and day school for boys in grades 7 through 12, with a one-year postgraduate program as well. Structured as an independent military-style environment, the school uses the best aspects of the military system to teach young men responsibility, self-discipline, leadership, respect for themselves and others, and the value of setting and achieving high standards.
Nestled in the heart of central Virginia in a beautiful rural setting, Fork Union Military Academy is a unique sanctuary for learning and achievement. Founded in 1898, Fork Union has remained true to its mission for more than a century—developing and inspiring young men in a demanding college preparatory environment, and challenging them to excel in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in their daily lives.
As a private school, it can structure its curriculum (such as the unique One Subject Plan for the Upper School) to meet the needs of its students. It can preserve our single-sex environment to remove social distractions that come with a coeducational school. It can acknowledge and honor the Christian values that provide the moral compass for one's daily life.
As a boarding school, it can facilitate profound and long-lasting change in the life of a young man. Structure and discipline become the norms of his life, not merely the constraints he must put up with for the relatively few hours of his school day. Responsibility and respect for others are lessons learned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at Fork Union—not just for a few hours on weekdays.
The Academy's success shows in the lives of the school's graduates, whether it is the 100% college acceptance rate, the hundreds of student-athletes who have gone on to play in college and at the professional level, including two Heisman Trophy winners (Vinny Testaverde and Eddie George) and twelve NFL first-round draft picks, the more than three dozen seniors earning appointments to our nation's top service academies in the past ten years, or well-known entrepreneurs like Kevin Plank, the founder of Under Armour, or Jacques Panis, President of Shinola, the luxury watch, bicycle, and leather goods company making news for restoring manufacturing to downtown Detroit.
Fork Union Military Academy's rigorous admission standards, high academic expectations, and focus on achievement help outstanding young men develop, compete, and accomplish even more than they thought possible. In its safe and structured academic environment, based on Christian values, young men develop the qualities of character, self-discipline, respect, and leadership essential for success in life.
