The modern food supply system is a complex and diverse supply chain, including significant imports, science-based knowledge, and an engaged consumer.

From the recent scare surrounding sickness at Chipotle restaurants to worries about what to put on the dinner table, food safety is as top-of-mind as it’s ever been.

This month, Choices Magazine, a publication of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, is taking an in-depth look at the impact of what’s been called “the most significant reform of the U.S. food safety laws in over 70 years.”

“Producer Impacts of the Food Safety Modernization Act” features three articles focused on different impacts of the act, which went into full effect earlier this year:

  • “The Food Safety Modernization Act and Production of Specialty Crops,” by Luis A. Ribera of Texas A&M University
  • “The Food Safety Modernization Act and the Marketing of Fresh Produce,” by Alba J. Collart of Mississippi State University
  • “The Food Safety Modernization Act and Agricultural Imports,” by Amanda M. Countryman of Colorado State University

“The modern food supply system is a complex and diverse supply chain, including significant imports, science-based knowledge, and an engaged consumer,” Ribera said. “While potential benefits have been at least partially documented, the benefits of safer food are not without cost.”
