A UK bathroom specialist is set to expand after a start-up loan and a year’s free mentoring laid the foundations for growth.

Ryan spent 15 years working for national and local bathroom companies, including in franchise management, but always wanted to open his own bathroom business.
The chance came in autumn 2013 when he and his wife opened a new bathroom showroom, to help raise the cash, they applied to the government-backed Start-Up Loans scheme fronted by entrepreneur James Caan from TV’s Dragon’s Den. As his financial and legal preparations moved ahead, Ryan engaged a team of contractors to complete the fit-out of the premises, including 14 display suites, ready to launch the business in January 2014.
“We had a really busy initial few months, which was a real buzz,” he said. “It really took the pressure off and it was a great feeling to know we were on the way.” Since then, the business has surpassed an initial six-figure sales projection. Customer consultations are driven by 3D high-definition design software and an online shop has provided a further route to market.
