Garden Tower Project Wins National Green Business Award
Bloomington, Ind. (PRWEB) March 21, 2016 -- Garden Tower Project won Green America’s Winter 2016 People and Planet Award. The $5,000 award is given to innovative U.S. small businesses that integrate environmental and social considerations into their strategies and operations. Garden Tower Project was chosen because of its container garden, the Garden Tower 2 (GT2.)
The GT2 container garden is already known as one of the best practices in food sustainability by making growing organic vegetables a reality in locations that have never before been capable of nourishing plants, like flat rooftops, concrete slabs and ordinary decks. By growing plants vertically in a soil based system it enables one to grow 50 plants or more in just 4 square feet without the use of electricity.
Already committed to reducing waste, reusing resources and upcycling, the GT2 has a perforated compost center column that allows for vermicomposting. Now Garden Tower Project is working to become the first company worldwide in the garden industry producing a large durable product with fossil-free HDPE as an highly durable, long-lasting, and recyclable alternative to petroleum-based HDPE plastic.
This fossil-free HDPE is produced with carbon, which is 97 percent harvested from the atmosphere by the sustainable farming of sugar cane. Even after transportation to the manufacturing facility, the raw material sequesters more atmospheric carbon than is released during its production. The use of a renewably-sourced plastic, combined with the purchase of renewable energy for manufacturing, will allow Garden Tower Project to produce the garden solutions, which have a verified positive impact on the climate, water and human health.
"We are honored to be chosen as a winner of the Green America award! We will use part of the award to fund our R&D efforts toward utilizing sugar cane based plastics to manufacture the GT2 in the future. The remainder will be used toward local food and community initiatives," said Kristi Armes, business manager at Garden Tower Project.
