University of Louisiana at Lafayette Counseling Students Gain Insight on Addiction Treatment
(PRWEB) March 18, 2016 -- On Thursday March 3rd, Victory Addiction Recovery Center demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the community yet again by partnering with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) to help give exposure to residential addiction and mental health treatment to the graduate and undergraduate counseling students in the ULL program.
The day began at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with Victory Addiction Recovery Center counselor Beka Daugereaux, LPC, educating the ULL undergrad psychology students on the disease of addiction, substance abuse treatment, and the steps to take to become an addictions counselor.
Later, Victory Addiction Recovery Center hosted Counselors in Training Event. The evening consisted of a tour of the 22,000 square foot facility which includes a 26 bed residential unit along with meeting rooms for outpatient and family counseling.
“Several students in the course expressed their interest in working primarily with substance abusers and their families,” says ULL counseling professor Kristy Fusilier PhD, LPC. Fusilier who also serves as the Assistant Director of the ULL Counseling and Testing Center. “I felt an inpatient facility, such as Victory, would provide a comprehensive view of both the inpatient and outpatient aspects of substance abuse for these future counselors,” Fusilier continued.
After taking a look at what Victory Addiction Recovery Center has to offer spatially, the prospective therapists met with Clinical Director Kerri Cunningham LCSW, LAC. Cunningham with over 10 years of experience in substance abuse counseling, therapist supervision and training explained the ins and outs of what a typical and non-typical day can be like.
