Commitment to staff retention drives employee satisfaction and sustained growth

It was more important to us that our team be able to get home quickly than brag about having digs in a trendy part of town.

Twin Cities-based college marketing agency Campus Media Group Inc. has been honored by Minnesota Business as one of the state’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” The award recognizes the 14-year-old agency’s commitment to establishing a culture that fosters employee engagement and job satisfaction. Other Twin Cities digital marketing agencies included in the list are Carmichael Lynch, TopRank Marketing, NordicClick and Spyder Trap.

“This honor directly reflects the talent and dedication of the individuals that make up our team — which is something our clients have known for some time,” said Jason Bakker, chief operating officer at Campus Media Group. “The college marketing world is fast paced, and we are always exploring the cutting edge of technology and marketing trends. Driven by collaboration and innovation, we all share in the success of our clients and our company, and we have fun doing it!”

The 14-year old agency currently employs 16 people and projects to grow another 25 percent over the next year. A core part of Campus Media Group’s success is its culture of engaging employees in continual feedback on everything from company policies to such things as its recent office relocation.

“Understanding that commute time was a huge concern among our people in the relocation, we began by asking where they did and did not want to be,” Bakker said. “What we heard was they preferred the south metro due to shorter commutes and access to great food options, parks, and the airport. It was more important to us that our team be able to get home quickly than brag about having digs in a trendy part of town.”

Another element of Campus Media Group’s high level of employee satisfaction is the agency’s commitment to proactively supporting a healthy work/life flow for its staff. As part of its benefits package, employees have flexible workday hours, paid time off for volunteering, summer hours with half-day Fridays and an onsite fitness center.

“Resetting the baseline on what we feel is now expected in today’s workplace is important to the ongoing evolution of our agency” Bakker said. “For us to even be in someone’s consideration set as a potential employer, we knew that a generous PTO package, top-notch medical coverage with premium assistance, and a 401k with matching was just the minimum. To really hire and retain the best talent in Minnesota, we have to promote a message that we are a growing agency with opportunities for newcomers to make an impact on day one. That message — combined with frequent team outings on Lake Minnetonka or Twins baseball games, after-work gatherings, and individual training — creates a great place to work.”

With “The 100 Best Companies to Work For” award, Minnesota Business salutes Minnesota organizations that are setting the standard for leadership, benefits, best work environment, innovative training programs, and employee happiness. After being nominated, each company’s employees were anonymously surveyed by an independent research group commissioned by Minnesota Business and asked to share their thoughts on the work environment, benefits, leadership, and overall workplace culture.

Campus Media Group and other recipients of the “Best Companies to Work For” honor will be recognized at an event on June 2, 2016, at the Depot Renaissance Hotel in Minneapolis. For more information on the award, visit http://www.minnesotabusiness.com.
