Menlo College Provost Terri Givens Shares Fitness Strategies with Silicon Valley Youth and Women
Atherton, CA (PRWEB) March 23, 2016 -- Menlo College Provost Terri Givens was invited to become a member of the Board for the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula (BGCP), the largest Silicon Valley area organization focused on extended learning for at-risk youth. Working with parents, community partners and schools, BGCP serves 1,800 boys and girls in East Palo Alto, Redwood City and eastern Menlo Park. They implement proven social and academic interventions that most impact a child’s achievement in school and in life. In neighborhoods where more than one-third of young people drop out of high school, 90 percent of BGCP school site members graduate from high school with a plan for college or career.
As a scholar, Dr. Givens focuses on the global politics of immigration, as well as European politics. In between earning her bachelor's degree in international relations from Stanford University and her doctoral degree in political science from UCLA, Dr. Givens worked in the fields of community service and nonprofit administration. She is the author of several publications and is a regular columnist for Inside Higher Ed.
A lifelong athlete who believes fitness helps strengthen the foundation of families and communities, Givens founded Take Back the Trail (http://www.takebackthetrail.com) to empower women and encourage the development of healthy families. “I’m pleased to be able to share with youth the importance of staying fit," Givens said. "Physical fitness and team-building built through athletics are important building blocks for academic success.”
On March 31, Givens will be a keynote speaker at the Sports, Entertainment and Technology Symposium, an event organized by Women in Technology International, a leading global business organization for women in technology at Jabil’s Blue Sky Innovation Center in San Jose, CA. Attendees will hear from key players who are leading the way for women as the sports, entertainment and technology industries converge.
