In its fourth year, Ignite, Palo Alto Networks’ annual user conference, brings together next-generation security experts from around the world. Its attendees include security industry veterans, Palo Alto Networks product experts, and experienced Palo Alto Networks customers. Ignite includes dozens of educational sessions to address today’s toughest security challenges, share best practices, provide hands-on training, and highlight new innovations.

In a breakout session, Flynn will discuss evolving threats to Process Control systems, where defense through traditional segmentation of business and process control networks is no longer sufficient. He will discuss how next-generation segmentation can help IT leaders, namely in the manufacturing industry, prevent today’s increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

“The practice of segmenting business networks from process control networks is nothing new, he said. “For most manufacturing, energy, water, and gas corporations, it is one of the first tactical implementations of an internal firewall. But while this approach reduces the attack surface, in today’s threat environment, it is no longer enough.”

Flynn recommends that to address advanced threats that target critical systems, IT departments must further segment their networks and secure them from threats, users, and applications.

“To properly secure these networks, we need to model our architecture in the same way we use DMZs to defend the network perimeter,” he said. “What’s needed is a third zone for process management. A three-zone deployment allows greater restriction of communications into and out of our critical systems in the process control zone.”
