ViperSharp launched on Kickstarter to bring an advancement to precision sharpening

True precision sharpening for all your knives!

Many outdoorsmen carry a knife as an every day item and know how important and useful a knife is in daily living. A new company from Utah has developed a product called the ViperSharp to help us all keep an edge on our knives. Creator Mike Wood stated, "I’ve adopted a phrase from my grandfather in law, 'I’d rather go without my pants than without my knife'”.

The concept of ViperSharp was hatched in November of 2014 and was launched on Kickstarter as a reimagined precision knife sharpener. It’s the first time a precision knife sharpener has stepped away from flat to embrace the cylinder and that may just be one of the reasons for it’s appeal. It certainly seems to have an effect on the performance. There are many such systems on the market but those on the level of ViperSharp often cost hundreds of dollars and don’t offer the same level of efficiency according to Mike Wood, the creator of ViperSharp. This is one space aged invention that will change the game of knife sharpening.

The innovation starts with the cylinder shape of the ViperSharp stand. This design allows an almost infinite adjustment for angle that is limited only by the need to clamp onto the blade. This sleeve and post design includes a receiving rail for the clamp that holds the knife and an ingenious bearing that allows the movement needed with no room for slop that is so prevalent in lower end systems.

The blade clamp is designed to hold the knife firmly without marring the blade during operation and when needed it can be easily swapped to sharpen the other side of the blade. It is held secure with it’s patent pending design and yet allows the freedom needed for swapping sides while keeping the desired angle.

The stone handle is another stroke of genius using magnets to hold onto the stone and allow easy transition between grits. Each stone is held tight in place when needed and comes out easily for swapping to the next stone. The system is even designed to allow multiple width stones which is again an upgrade from other systems that offer only one stone width. A true innovation, the ViperSharp is already making waves across the nation.

There are a wide variety of options for pledging. The cost for one ViperSharp starts at $91, which includes the full kit (including base), one set of stones, and a padded case. The expected retail is $150. If you want extra stone sets for polishing they are available for $35 and other stones will be available including rounded stones and rods for sharpening recurve and serrated blades.

ViperSharp expects to begin shipping the first orders in June, assuming their goal of $10,000 is reached. That appears very likely since they have already raised a significant amount toward this goal. You can find out more and make a pledge on their kickstarter campaign here.
