ISSA Los Angeles Announces Cory Doctorow As Keynote Speaker For 8th Annual Information Security Summit
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 29, 2016 -- The Los Angeles Chapter of Information Systems Security Information (ISSA-LA) is pleased to announce Cory Doctorow—science fiction novelist, blogger and technology activist—as the closing keynote speaker at the Eighth Annual Information Security Summit, Southern California’s premier information security event. The event is scheduled to take place on May 19th - May 20th at the Universal Hilton in California—Doctorow is slated to speak on Friday May 20th.
Cory Doctorow is the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing (boingboing.net), and a contributor to The Guardian, Publishers Weekly, Wired, and many other newspapers, magazines and websites. He is a special consultant to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org), a non-profit civil liberties group that defends freedom in technology law, policy, standards and treaties. Doctorow is also the author of Little Brother, a novel taught at West Point and Quantico; and Homeland, which accompanied Edward Snowden from Hong Kong to Russia.
“We are excited to have Cory Doctorow speak at ISSA-LA’s 8th annual summit since the realities of cybersecurity are catching up to the wild and crazy ideas presented in science fiction novels,” says Richard Greenberg, President, ISSA Los Angeles. “What were once dreams are now reality. Buckminster Fuller in 1966 proposed a worldwide technological revolution…[that] would take place quite independently of politics or ideology; it would be carried out by what he called “comprehensive designers” who would coordinate resources and technology on a world scale for the benefit of all mankind. Clearly this has come to pass. But with this comes the potential for attacks and damage on a massive scale. All of us must struggle to keep up with the changing threat landscape as more of the things in our daily lives become targets.”
The ISSA-LA Information Security Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed to encourage participation and interaction among all three vital information security constituencies: (1) business executives, senior business managers, and their trusted advisors; (2) technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and (3) information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information.
“As our bodies engulf networked computers and are being engulfed by them, we're still legislating them like they were jihadi recruiting tools, or pornography distribution systems, or better video-on-demand services,” says Doctorow. ‘Networked computers are the planetary nervous system of the 21st century, and until we regulate them with all the gravitas that demands, we will find ourselves being victimized by them in every conceivable way, in a fashion that makes Orwell look like a Tellytubbie.”
The Information Security Summit is part of ISSA-LA’s important community outreach program. The goal of the program is to help our community stay safe from cybercrime by enabling collaboration between business and community leaders, technical IT professionals and the information security community. Speakers like Doctorow help connect the dots between our digital and physical worlds.
