EuclidIQ Announces Continued Improvements in its Video Quality Optimization Plug In, Hires First Sales Director

Company’s continues x264-based visual quality advancements, welcomes first director of sales


EuclidIQ, an innovative leader in the field of perceptual quality optimization (PQO), today announces further gains in its video quality optimization product, the IQ264x plugin for the x264 encoder. In addition, EuclidIQ welcomes a new Director of Sales and Business Development to the company.

IQ264x continues to achieve consistently high gains, measured as bandwidth savings against a reference encoder—in this case the x264 encoder—while still maintaining equivalent quality for that video.

In a recent subjective test that included video clips distributed across the motion-complexity spectrum, IQ264x achieved a median gain of 26.5% when compared to the reference x264 encoder.

“In an attempt to create a more even spread of testing across the motion and complexity spectrum,” said Nigel Lee, EuclidIQ’s Chief Science Officer, “we’ve added a number of videos to our test corpus. The end result has been a significant improvement in overall bandwidth reduction for low-, medium-, and high-complexity and motion test videos.”

IQ264x achieves its gains through perceptual quality optimization, determining the most perceptually important parts of each video frame. It then instructs the encoder to use these determinations—in what EuclidIQ calls its Unified Map—to improve quality in perceptually more important parts of the video frame, while saving bits in perceptually less important parts.

“EuclidIQ's IQ264 fits directly in the encoder's pipeline,” said Lee, “which means it has no need to run as a separate process.”

EuclidIQ continues to improve the IQ264x product and will be reporting further gains in the near future.

On the personnel front, EuclidIQ welcomes Misty Farrell-Pennington, our new Director of Sales and Business Development.

Farrell-Pennington comes to EuclidIQ from a background in hardware-based video transport equipment, including a number of years of experience in ASIC- and FPGA-based H.264 encoding sales. Yet she sees the shift to software encoding as being an important trend in the industry.

“In recent years we have seen a shift away from hardware,” said Farrell-Pennington, “to open platforms and cloud based software solutions. These software-driven solutions perform the same encoding, multiplexing, and transport processes in a smaller more cost effective footprint.”

Farrell-Pennington joins the EuclidIQ team just prior to the National Association of Broadcasters show, held each April in Las Vegas. The EuclidIQ team is sending out meeting requests for our invitation-only demonstrations of IQ264x and the future of perceptual quality optimization for other codecs such as HEVC.
