Iprona AG: Human Trial Results Published in "Nutrients" / Unique Elderberry Formula Protects Air Travelers from Colds
Lana, Italy (PRWEB) April 07, 2016 -- The final results of a large human trial, which investigated the benefits of a proprietary elderberry formula on respiratory health for air travelers, have been published in the journal Nutrients. The two-year randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial had promising results.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 20% of all travelers experience respiratory infections that require them to seek medical care. For those traveling long distance, upper respiratory infections are among the most prevalent problems they’ll face — along with jet lag and fatigue. The new study showed that taking an elderberry formula could help.
The trial involved 312 economy class passengers on intercontinental flights from Australia. It was conducted at the School of Pharmacy, Griffith University, Australia. Subjects were divided up into two groups. One group took 600–900mg per day of Iprona AG´s membrane-enriched elderberry formula before, during and after travel. The other group received a placebo.
The group that took the elderberry formula experienced significant health benefits compared to the placebo group. If participants in either group contracted a cold, those who took the elderberry formula experienced a significantly shorter illness duration, with less severe symptoms. They also experienced better physical health after their travels.
As the research showed, "Travelers using elderberry … on average experienced a 2-day shorter duration of [their] cold and also noticed a reduction in cold symptoms. Physical health may stabilize during air travel due to elderberry.”
The same elderberry formula used in this trial was previously the subject of a clinical study by Dr. Christian Kravitz at the University of Giessen. In that study, the formula was found to have clear inhibitory effects against influenza A and B viruses, as well as against four bacteria known to cause upper respiratory infections.
Together, these studies pave the way for formulations targeted to support the health of travelers, whether making a journey by air or other means.
The extract used in the research was a unique formulation produced by the Italian company, Iprona AG, using their proprietary membrane ultrafiltration enrichment process. The elderberry extract is standardized to optimize its concentration of anthocyanins and active compounds in the original fruit matrix.
“The high potency of the extract used in these studies is the result of a very unique European elderberry variety, the Haschberg variety, and a proprietary extraction method,” said Iprona AG Technical Director Anthony Jacobs.
Iprona AG markets these premium health ingredients under their BerryPharma® brand.
