High-resolution, Portable PET Scanner for Veterinary Applications Launched by Universal Medical Systems
Solon, OH (PRWEB) April 12, 2016 -- Universal Medical Systems, Inc. (UMS) of Ohio, an industry leading supplier of veterinary computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, and Maryland-based Brain Biosciences, Inc. (BrainBio™), developer of high-resolution portable Positron Emission Tomography (PET) instruments, announce the launch of the piPET™ PET scanner. The unit is designed for both small and large animals with particular emphasis on lameness diagnosis in horses. UMS will be the exclusive distributor of piPET for veterinary applications throughout the United States.
The new equipment, BrainBio’s piPET scanner, a portable instrument with 2mm resolution and 22 cm bore diameter, weighs only 50 pounds. The system has been specifically designed for animal imaging targeting veterinary hospitals, research institutions, and biotechnology companies. Due to its small footprint, ruggedness, low power consumption, and environmental stability, piPET can be deployed in a wide variety of facilities. The unit can also be shared between several imaging centers.
PET imaging is a standard technique in human medicine. PET imaging of horses has not been previously possible due to difficulty of positioning equine patients inside the standard PET instruments. With the new portable design from BrainBio, this molecular imaging modality can now be applied to improve management of cases of equine lameness.
According to David Zavagno, president of UMS, “We are enthusiastic to be working with Brain Biosciences to offer the piPET scanner to the equine veterinary community. This technology will improve clinical diagnosis and take treatment to the next level.”
“PET, as a molecular imaging technique, holds great promise for diagnosing equine lameness,” said David Beylin, president of BrainBio. “X-ray radiography, CT and MRI imaging provide information about anatomical changes due to trauma or disease process. piPET scanner allows you to scan and visualize disease-related changes in metabolism on a molecular level, in 3D, with high resolution and contrast. UMS has decades of experience serving the veterinary market and has a track record of bringing advanced radiology solutions to equine medicine. We are excited about working with David Zavagno and Universal Medical Systems, Inc. to bring this powerful imaging modality to the equine veterinary practitioner.”
