Fundación Tropicalia, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with Cisneros Real Estate’s Tropicalia luxury tourism development in the Dominican Republic, will sponsor its 2016 summer program for girls called “Soy Niña, Soy Importante” (SNSI: ‘I’m a Girl, I’m Important’) in the developing community of Miches. The camp provides a safe, educational and fun environment in an effort to teach at-risk 9-12 year old girls about healthy living and personal and career development.
The 2016 program, scheduled for July and August, will host approximately 250 girls from Miches, a rural community along the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Through recreational and educational activities, SNSI encourages these girls to develop personal values, artistic and creative expression, self-esteem and self-awareness, and helps them to understand their value to their community and society. Educational activities also touch on important social issues including personal safety and domestic violence; staying in school; sex education; nutrition and exercise; and socioeconomic skills.
To support this year’s SNSI program, the foundation has set a fundraising goal of USD $45,000 to cover transportation, educational materials, food and accommodations for camp volunteers, and a staff that includes specialized teachers and a nurse. Fundación Tropicalia designs and implements programs for the Miches community in four principal areas: education; productivity; the environment; and cultural and social advocacy.
