Three Greenberg Traurig Shareholders to Speak at Mortgage Bankers Association Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance Conference

Shareholders Michele L. Stocker and Jennifer L. Gray, both co-chairs of the Consumer Financial Services Litigation Practice, as well as Shareholder Murray B. Silverstein, all from global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will be speaking at the 2016 Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance (LIRC) Conference.

Shareholders Michele L. Stocker and Jennifer L. Gray, both co-chairs of the Consumer Financial Services Litigation Practice, as well as Shareholder Murray B. Silverstein, all from global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, will be speaking at the 2016 Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance (LIRC) Conference. This four-day event will take place May 1-4, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center.

Stocker will be presenting on the panel “Major Litigation Update – Cases and Trends Affecting the Industry,” taking place at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 2. This panel of litigators will recap major litigation, including recent cases heard by the Supreme Court, U.S. Courts of Appeal, and other federal courts affecting the industry. Other major cases and case trends in major state court actions will also be considered.

With her broad range of experience representing clients in the financial services industry, Stocker leads a core group of attorneys in multiple offices across the country with substantial mortgage banking litigation experience, representing clients in individual borrower cases as well as class actions. She is a frequent speaker on issues impacting the financial services industry, and also speaks regularly regarding diversity issues. Recently named as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, Stocker is a commercial litigator with a broad range of experience representing clients in the financial services industry including regional and national banks, loan servicers, consumer finance companies, mortgage bankers, credit card issuers, debt buyers, and third-party debt collectors.

Gray will be participating in the “Other Major Litigation” panel at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1. This forum session will consider major cases affecting the industry outside of servicing and foreclosure actions. Cases will involve a variety of laws including the False Claims Act and the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), along with cases on overarching matters such as class action certification and standing.

Gray represents financial institutions in civil litigation and regulatory enforcement matters. She has significant experience defending class actions arising under a broad range of federal consumer protection statutes, including FCRA, FDCPA, RESPA, TILA, EFTA, ECOA, and TCPA. She also defends clients in cases involving state unlawful and deceptive practices acts and other state laws. Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, Gray held senior in-house litigation positions at several large financial institutions, where she gained in-depth knowledge of the consumer finance industry and consumer finance products. While in-house, she oversaw class action litigation and managed in-house litigation management processes. She has experience with a wide range of legal issues affecting the industry, including fair lending, loan origination and servicing, repurchase issues, vendor management, HOA liens, and reverse mortgages, among others. With this background, Gray brings a practical, insider’s perspective to representing and advising clients in litigation and litigation avoidance.

Silverstein will be speaking on the panel “State Court Litigation,” beginning at 5 p.m. also on Sunday, May 1. This session will focus on the wide array of state litigation and enforcement actions affecting the mortgage industry including homeowner association litigation, MERS, and state UDAAP claims, to name a few.

With more than 34 years’ experience in complex commercial, business, and real estate litigation, as well as appeals throughout the federal and state courts of Florida, Silverstein is a Board Certified Civil Trial Attorney and Board Certified Business Litigator in the State of Florida. He represents lenders, servicers, and financial service providers in class actions and defense of state, federal, and common law claims in litigation or arbitration arising out of secured and unsecured credit relationships in consumer and commercial transactions.
