With social algorithms on the rise, it’s important for companies to be aware of the changes.

Evolving social algorithms are impacting the way everyone uses social, especially brands

Social media channels are developing and enhancing algorithms in order to learn and evaluate the interests of their users. In a world where user experience is everything, it is important for companies to be aware of the key developments happening in the social world and how that will affect social strategy.

Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter have already implemented some big changes. With 2 billion active users on social media, it has become a primary outlet for businesses to reach customers.

“Evolving social algorithms are impacting the way everyone uses social, especially brands,” said Michelle Malina, social media manager at Idea Grove. “Now, more than ever, it's important to share the right content and focus on quality over quantity in your strategy. Although the overwhelming response to social algorithms has been on the negative side, companies shouldn't view it in a negative light. It's pushing brands to do what they should already be doing.”

Instagram recently announced that their new algorithm will sort feeds based on what they believe will be most interesting to the individual user. The algorithm takes into consideration different social factors like content that you have previously liked in order to choose what appears first. Instagram got this idea from Facebook, which currently has an algorithm that populates each newsfeed with content based on a user’s previous actions.

Twitter is still in the experimental stage of the algorithm process. Right now users have the option of toggling the timeline personalization feature on or off. This feature places what Twitter thinks are the “best” tweets at the top of their feed.

What do all these changes mean for your company? The new algorithms restrict organic reach, so companies will likely have to consider paid ads. It also means that quality is even more important than quantity in the challenge to share something your followers find interesting and engaging.
