Belarus Unveils First Nuclear Power Station – Built on PENETRON Technology
East Setauket, New York (PRWEB) April 25, 2016 -- Expected to go online in 2018, the 2,400 MW nuclear power plant – a first for Belarus – in the Mogilev region of eastern Belarus is expected to provide electricity at half the cost of imported natural gas currently used as an energy source. Initial project costs were estimated at US$5 billion.
The project comprises a 2,400 MW plant (2 x 1200 MWe AES-2006 units using V-491 reactors) built by Atomstroyexport, a Russian contractor. Concrete for Reactor Unit 1 was poured in late 2013; construction on Reactor Unit 2 began in mid-2014. The first reactor is expected to be operational by 2018, and the second reactor will go online by 2020. The construction project follows all nuclear and radiation safety guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“Government and project experts researched dozens of materials and technologies and ultimately chose the safest option: the PENETRON System,” notes Igor Chernogolov, President of PENETRON Russia, which opened a new production facility in Gomel, Belarus, last year.
Construction work first began with the 8-meter (27-feet) thick anchor slab, where a proven waterproofing system was needed to provide absolute protection from groundwater for the reinforced concrete structures and also remain tolerant to high radiation. In addition to the massive reactor structures, PENETRON materials were also used in the foundations of the administrative buildings and residential housing for the power plant employees.
“We’re very pleased with the success of PENETRON technology in this showcase Belarus project,” says Robert Revera, President and CEO of The PENETRON Group. “Such demanding and complex projects confirm the value and effectiveness of our crystalline technology.”
