Dr. Gary B. Fogel to Receive AIAA San Diego Outstanding Achievement Award
Muncie, IN (PRWEB) April 22, 2016 -- The Academy of Model Aeronautics is pleased to announce that the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) San Diego Section has awarded AMA member Dr. Gary B. Fogel of San Diego the Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award for the San Diego Section. The award celebrates Fogel’s three decades of volunteer service for aeromodeling and aviation history, specifically helping the public understand the importance of San Diego’s place in aerospace. Gary also teaches Introduction to Aerospace Engineering to incoming freshmen at San Diego State University.
Gary has a lengthy record of service to the AMA and he has done much to preserve the history of aeromodeling and flight in the West. He is the author of The Torrey Pines Gliderport and the co-author of Quest for Flight: John J. Montgomery and the Dawn of Aviation in the West. Published in 2014 and 2012 respectively, both books detail California’s contributions to the early days of flight. He also held the National Aeronautic Association record for F3 R/C glider class 158 Distance to Goal and Return at a distance of 39.1 km (24.29 miles) from 2005 to 2012. Gary is a member of AMA’s model aircraft standards workgroup, which has been integral in continuing AMA’s progress toward protecting modelers’ rights to fly in the national airspace. He also serves as an AMA Leader Member and is an AMA Fellow.
The AIAA will recognize Gary’s contributions during its Annual Awards Banquet at San Diego State University on April 25, 2016.
