Evangelical Conference Promoting Equality between Men and Women Coming to Orlando, FL in 2017
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) April 29, 2016 -- In July 2017, Christians from around the world will gather in Orlando, Florida for a purpose many might not expect: to promote the equality of women and men in Christian churches and families.
The conference, “Mutual by Design: Building God’s Church Together,” hosted by Christians for Biblical Equality (CBE) will promote the view that the Bible places no gender-based limits on Christian service. The conference theme is based on 1 Corinthians 11:11: “In the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.”
“Mutual by Design” is the latest in a long series of conferences hosted by CBE, dating back to the early 1990’s. According to CBE’s president, Dr. Mimi Haddad, the need for the egalitarian perspective is as great as ever. “Around the world, women and girls suffer oppression because they are considered less valuable than men. This devaluation of women is often justified by patriarchal readings of the Bible. CBE exists to proclaim that there is a better way. Neither God nor the Bible calls for gender-based hierarchy in the church, family, or community. In fact, the gospel proclaims a new way of being—one in which all people are valued equally and free (and obligated) to serve the church and world according to their gifts. This is how the family of God is to function, and this is impossible under a system that permanently places men in authority over women. Egalitarians have made much progress over the centuries, but as long as women are suffering under so-called ‘biblical’ patriarchy, we have work to do.”
CBE’s 2017 conference will feature leading evangelical voices from around the world. Confirmed plenary speakers include Ben Witherington III, the Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and Michael Bird, Lecturer in Theology at Ridley College in Melbourne, Australia. Workshop speakers confirmed so far include Dr. Jamin Hübner, Nilwona Nowlin, Shi-Min Lu, and Jory Micah.
“Mutual by Design” will be held July 21-23, 2017 at Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Resort in Orlando, Florida.
In its effort to advance a biblical foundation for gift-based rather than gender-based ministry and service, CBE sponsors annual conferences, facilitates local chapters, hosts an online bookstore, and publishes two award-winning journals. For more information, visit http://www.cbeinternational.org.
