We want to create a breastfeeding experience that gives mother a sense of calm and confidence, and encouraging her to continue breastfeeding and benefit from it.

Momsense, Inc. has developed a unique, wearable technology that is transforming breastfeeding for nursing mothers. The company’s patented technology, The Smart Breastfeeding Meter, is designed to monitor and measure a baby’s milk intake while breastfeeding. Today, the company announced that the technology is now available for purchase at Target.com.
Breastfeeding is a leading contributor to infant and adulthood health (World Health Organization, Center of Disease Control). However, as recent studies have shown, nearly 50% of all mothers cited insufficient milk supply as their reason to stop breastfeeding (Journal of Pediatrics, 2013; Office of the Surgeon General, NIH, 2011). As a result, Momsense has created The Smart Breastfeeding Meter to provide mothers with peace of mind and comfort in knowing how much breast milk their baby has consumed.
The Smart Breastfeeding Meter consists of a user friendly smartphone app and earphone set containing an embedded baby safe sensor for mothers to listen to their baby’s swallowing sounds. Together, these features measure how much milk the baby is consuming while nursing. The app also tracks and reports the nursing patterns overtime, records the baby’s swallowing sounds to share with loved ones, and even gives helpful breastfeeding tips.
Developed by technology experts, Momsense performs a complex analysis that calculates the quantity of milk consumed. It identifies a baby’s effective swallowing sounds in real-time, via a unique audio signal, which can distinguish between the effective swallowing sounds and other baby sounds. As such, the algorithm is a result of data comprised of hundreds of nursing events that were documented in the Momsense laboratory. The computed quantities of milk consumed were compared with recorded changes in babies’ weights directly after feeding (the medical standard today to calculate the amount of milk consumed). As a result, Momsense was able to compute an optimal assessment of the quantity of milk the baby consumed, thus acting as a valuable resource to help breastfeeding mothers.
“Breastfeeding is a significant period for both mother and baby,” said Dr. Osnat Emanuel, CEO of Momsense. “We want to create a breastfeeding experience that gives mother a sense of calm and confidence, and encouraging her to continue breastfeeding and benefit from it.”
The analysis of the feeding results is all done in real-time using any smart device, with recommended use on flight mode. The Momsense app can be downloaded from the Apple Store and Google Play, using a unique product code found in each package.
