OrthoArizona Orthopedic Surgeon Robert Berghoff Expands Arthroscopic Surgery to Treat Running-Related Injuries

With a 70 percent growth in running participation in the last decade, according to Running USA, and 79 percent of runners injured each year, according to the National Center for Biomechanical Information, the need for arthroscopic treatment in runners has increased. The minimally invasive technique gives orthopedic surgeons the ability to better visualize, identify, and treat joint issues related to running.
“Running is a high impact exercise which can lead to bone and joint injuries that require medical attention,” said Berghoff, who specializes in arthroscopy, total joint surgery, fracture care and sports injuries. “However, the minimally invasive nature of arthroscopy makes it an ideal treatment option for injured runners as recovery time is typically minimal, allowing patients to get back to their active lifestyles in as little time as possible.”
Arthroscopy allows orthopedic surgeons to more accurately diagnose and treat joint problems by creating small incisions in the skin and inserting pen-sized instruments inside the affected joint.
Lights and lenses attached to the instruments reveal the joint structure so that surgeons can treat orthopedic injuries that may exist, such as inflammation and cartilage tears or degeneration.
“In general, running is great exercise,” Berghoff said, “but because of its rigor, runners need to be more cautious, properly warm up and cool down essential muscle groups before and after running and pay close attention to injuries when they happen.”
